“According to folk wisdom, when a south wind blows, the fisherman’s belly is left empty. When the sun is high, fish don't get hooked, because the shadow scares them. ”
Kukkónia is an ancient fishing region in Europe. There are also some interesting legends about fishing and fishermen. According to one, King Stephen, who fell into the water during a deer hunt in the forest of Vajka , was rescued by two local fishermen. In gratitude, the king donated the surrounding lands and Danube islands to them. Fishing has always been one of the typical occupations of the region. Tradition passed from father to son for more than a thousand years. The fishponds of the region and the branches of the Danube are still popular fishing places for fishermen and anglers.
What fish can we catch in Kukkónia?
Carp, white grass carp, carassius or even silver carp Yet, in the deeper waters of Kukkónia, patient fishermen can also catch catfish, pike, barbel, asp, burbot, ziege, brown trout, sterlet and zander. The shallow, swampy, slow-flowing waters are loved by tench and weatherfish.
It is important to know however, that fishing laws in Slovakia are extremely strict. Without a permit one can only fish in private lakes. (A list of these is provided below.) Fishing in the Great Danube and the Little Danube, as well as in state-owned lakes and canals, requires a permit. (A list of state-owned waters can be found at www.srz-ds.sk under the "Rybárske revíry" menu item.) A valid fishing ticket is required to obtain a fishing license. This can be purchased by the local municipal house or town hall whose cadastre the particular lake, river or canal is located in. Locals can redeem the fishing permit in the local fishing association after paying various fees (registration fee, membership fee, fishing policy fee, membership stamp) - in Kukkónia Dunaszerdahely, Nagymegyer, Somorja, Komárom, Nyárasd, Gúta and Dénesdi. For tourists, the so-called guest permit has been introduced, which can be obtained for a period of one day or one week without the aforementioned fees. Upon completion of the fishing, a catch log must be completed on the form and handed in at the point of purchase of the guest license. The permit can also be obtained at weekends, you can inquire on the following telephone number: 0903 174 539. The permit can be obtained for waters belonging to the local fishing organization and the places specified by it (stagnant waters, lakes, occasionally for given rivers, such as the Little Danube - which is cheaper -, or waters belonging to the state fishing organization, which are more expensive. Fishing starts by recording the place and time of the fishing in the catch log. Fish caught and kept must also be indicated here. According to the new fishing law, there is a daily maximum of one sterlet or one a piece of Siberian sturgeon, or a piece of catfish, or two pieces of eel, or two pieces of carp, or two pieces of burbot, or two pieces of zander, or two pieces of Volga pikeperch, or two pieces of pike, or two pieces of tench , or two pieces of barbel, or we can catch and keep two pieces of lake trout, or two pieces of brown trout, or two pieces of grayling.
